*답답하다 (dapdaphada) = feeling frustrated, stuffy, suffocated, or stifled

there's not one word that equates to this feeling, it can be frustration but it's like a frustration born out of a suffocating/stuffy/stifling feeling/reason/situation

For example, you can feel dapdaphae if you're trying to get a word in during a meeting but people keep talking over you - being 'stifled' by being drowned out by other people

You can feel physically dapdaphae when you're in a packed, warm, stuffy elevator wearing a giant bulky fluffy winter coat and you have nowhere to go.. so like a frustration/stuffy/smothered feeling where you desperately want a breath of fresh air

Here, RM/BTS use this word to describe the necessary holding back of information that probably felt very suffocating for a while because they were itching to share with us for so long!

And if you've been following me for a bit, you know I ADORE and deeply respect BTS' wordplay game- but I also see a lot of ARMY overly impressed with very common Korean phrases like 'oh they're SOOO thoughtful/poetic' and while I don't want to say 'that's not true' - this is an instance where you might feel that but this is a VERY commonplace word that most Koreans use all the time

I'm all about trying to ACCURATELY portray the language. When there's awe-inspiring wordplay, double/triple entendres, jaw-dropping rhymes and bilingual references, etc. I'll try my best to point it out - but it always makes me kinda facepalm when I'm okay.. oh that's how they heard that huh.. because when I try to unpack words/idioms/concepts from Korean to English - I know what is commonplace versus impressive.. but I'm realizing that of course non-Korean speakers would have no sense of that. So I'll try to include that a bit more - not because I don't want you to be impressed. I just want you to know accurately.

Especially for Korea-based Koreans- although Arirang is deeeeeply familiar, this was not something anyone could reasonably 'anticipate' as a global kpop group's next move in 2026 - so I'm sure this has globally stunned everyone

Jung Kook on his solo album circuit handled all the performances like a pro, swept everyone off their feat, crushed all the interviews and appearances, and worked his ass off looking like a sentient bubble the whole time. But amidst his hyungs, he is bb kookooball 100000% and I LOVE that he has so much cuddly energy when he's around his hyungs without even meaning to go into boba mode.

RM: okay thank you.. so when we were all together ..[we asked ourselves] what is the most 'us'? we thought about that a lot and we wanted to show you ..where we started. All 7 of us are Korean after all and we thought it'd be good to include something that symbolizes Korea together so we started thinking about the keyword 'Arirang'.. but Arirang is interpreted differently by everyone after all cuz the lyrics are abstract

RM: it's about nostalgia and longing and love.. is what I think

RM: and I think I thought about that a lot while I was in the military.. I thought about the past.. concerts
hobi: you miss everything [while in the military]
RM: like society.. ARMY.. BTS members.. the past.. and in Arirang there's also the ups and downs of life so that kind of emotion is something we wanted to encompass in this album since it's been a while since we released an album and we wanted to cover the ups and downs we've been through

hobi: and it felt the most authentic to us ..it's our roots I think.. I think Arirang was the perfect fit to show that
JK: something that could tie it all together well..
hobi: i listened to it and felt like 'oh..'

RM: and like 10 years ago, at KCON Paris we sang 'Arirang'
JK: I recently rewatched our performance there

THE DAD JOKE
이상하다 (eesanghada) = to be strange/weird, and V had just called Jin weird for his extravagant "heLLoOoo" greeting
이 상하다 (ee sanghada) = the tooth (이) is decayed/rotted/spoiled (상하다)
These are spelled and pronounced exactly the same way when spoken quickly. So Jin took this opportunity to say "oh if my tooth is decayed shouldn't I go see the dentist?" as in deliberately "misunderstanding" V calling him "weird" as V telling him his tooth is decayed.

I guess around this time last year V may have had to run/do something for 40km in the military

So this is no longer the case in present day Korea but as of speaking with my parents about Arirang the other day, my mom told me stories about her guy friends who had to go through military service BACKKKKKK in the day and apparently it was really really rough - not just because the training is intense but the hazing was outrageous.

I know nothing about the military anywhere firsthand (obviiii) but my mom said she hated the mandatory enlistment rule VISCERALLY.Sometimes they'd require soldiers strip down to just their undergarments clean spaces in subzero temperatures, endure episodes of dangerous sleep deprivation, bear brutal physical abuse as 'discipline,' and navigate ranking enforced by fear rather than upheld by responsibility. Koreans dreaded having their brothers/uncles/cousins/friends having to serve their mandatory time.

After many deaths, suicides, and public scandals, there was reform. Now there's a zero-tolerance policy for physical abuse, human rights trainings for officers and NCOs, hotlines and channels for reporting (including outside their direct chain of command), shorter mandated service times, and increased oversight by civilian authorities.

That said, public shaming/humiliation, isolation, "tolerable" hazing (e.g., seniors dumping undesirable tasks onto their juniors, etc.) still prevail, even with outlets - juniors may still feel social pressure not to report issues or say no, obedience is oftentimes valued over well-being, so this culture of fostering 'camaraderie' through shared hardship still exists.

So it should stand out significantly that these giants of industry (in entertainment) that could have leveraged all kinds of deals to avoid or delay or lessen their military enlistment, did what they had to do and then enlisted and all served their terms in full. Further, that all of these men, far younger than a lot of their peers that enlisted on a more 'regular' timeline were a lot younger than them, that they may have had to take orders from younger folks and then train much younger folks coming in after them - the way they're all beloved and deeply respected by the juniors they oversaw. This doesn't mean they just made all the juniors' experiences easypeasy or watered down. Jin and j-hope have spoken about taking the time to explain things clearly, create margin for error, holding them accountable, and trying to lead by example.

I'm pretty sure none of my readers are like this - but if you ever find yourself tempted to suggest 'stop talking about the military' to them during their lives, you don't know what they've been through and if you claim to be a safe space for them - you'll listen.

RM: we poured a lot of different emotions into this album.. You can think of it as an album that contains a lot of different emotions
JK: if you listen to it, perhaps it'll feel like fate/luck has found you/lined up
SUGA: the album's good (MINSTRADAMUS has spoken)

JK: i keep listening to at least one [song] a day
RM: I also think this album is really good.. even if I listen to it a lot

I'm already so proud of them.. is that weird? no it's not. No matter what it sounds like - we know that it's precious to them, we know they poured their EVERYTHING into it, we know they worked so hard to get it just so, and we're so eager to support their artistry.

RM: if anyone felt a bit dapdaphae (see above) before the album came out, I think this [the album release] will really help relieve that...but I mean I guess we've always communicated through our music anyway so..

SUGA: we don't really have that much we're allowed to say at this point though...
RM: I especially have to watch what I say

so JK may be talking about the lighting or maybe they're actually monitoring themselves from an actual monitor and not just the tablet, it's probably really distracting to see their own images -especially if they're not feeling they look their best. If you've ever had a shitty, last-minute-cameras-ON-Zoom-meeting, you know!

RM: anyway.. the album is quite like.. ...pyongyang naengmyeon (평양냉면 = Pyongyang cold noodles, a North Korean dish known for its light, subtle flavors)
But beyond just a delightfully refreshing cold noodle dish, it has a lot of cultural significance. It's made with a milder flavored broth (than South Korean naengmyeon) and features buckwheat noodles - brownish/opaque/fragile/less chewy (vs. sweet potato/arrowroot starch noodles for SK) - clear greyish?/chewy, which gives it a unique texture and taste. It started as a 'winter' food but is now enjoyed probably year-round (vs. SK mul naengmyeon mainly a 'summer' food, served very icy (like with slushy iced broth)).

사골 (sagol) = beef bone broth, but also used metaphorically to describe something that is slow-cooked, rich [in flavor], and enduring

RM: but what I mean when I say it's like pyongyang naengmyeon ..more than that the songs feel like pyongyang naengmyeon.. i'm thinking the songs will be long-remembered and the 'taste' will be appreciated throughout time

Jm: among ourselves, we always get together and talk about how.. it's been so long since we've performed live and it feels scary.. there's a lot to worry about.. and we think like 'oh man we have to do well' but importantly -more than anything - we miss you all SO much, we WANT to perform SO badly..

hobi: like we really feel we have to go to as many places as we can to meet you all

hobi: right.. and if you see the venues that have been announced so far - i think it's been revealed as far as Manila

To all the ARMY all over the world that are a bit disappointed that they're not traveling near you, I say this:
1. I hear you. full stop.
2. There's also a chance that locations near you may not YET have been announced so there's still some hope.
3. But if you know, there's a low-to-zero likelihood they'll be visiting your town/state/province/country, please understand that it's not a matter of whether or not BTS members wanted to go there - it STARTS with whether or not that location has the INFRASTRUCTURE to be able to accommodate fans for a concert. It's not just about 'does a venue exist?' but are there transportation options, housing options, restaurant/food options, grocery options, medical care options, in systems able to accommodate a SURGE of thousands of individuals to safely journey to, stay, and navigate that location around the time of the concert. It doesn't matter if one venue would love to host them if the rest of the INFRASTRUCTURE cannot handle that kind of traffic, then it's unsafe for BTS, BTS staff, AND ARMY to saturate places like that.
4. Further, if there are not that many ARMY/kpop enthusiasts in your area in general enough to pique the interest of artists' to consider your area for concert potential, that's NOT your fault but that's also not their fault.
So vent, cry, live vicariously through your other global ARMY friends - but don't disparage the joy of ARMY that may be able to attend somewhere else. You can hold your own grief wholly and honestly without AT ALL diminishing someone else's joy.

RM: how longgg has it been since we were in Manila ??! like.. 2018 was the last time?
Jin: We're also trying to hit a lot of spots we haven'ttttt been to before
RM: of course we can't see ALL of you but anyway truly ..to as many locations as POSSIBLE to meet ARMY, unlike anything we've done before - our hearts are set on a longer tour through 2027

Jm: like we're so confident in our new album and I can assert it'll def show a 'new' side but beyond that we're also SO ready to show you something new with our comeback tour
