personal note - i SUPER don't like public displays of Korean aegyo~ idk why i find it so obnoxious UNLESS it's done between just sisters/girl friends or just brothers/guy friends.. and then for some reason I think it is the MOST endearing... but when it is done in this kind of context in mixed company - bLeGH! gross lol but this is just my opinion~

I'm sure the internet is split on how they see the concept of aegyo from full on support to full on loathing and everything in between 🤣

🩷this is the newly revived heart bbungtigi* and it’s basically as famous as the "InGa" sandwich you'd mentioned

뻥튀기 (bbungtigi) = is a puffed grain snack (usually white rice) and is a classic Korean snack that transcends generations and time lol think of it as a slightly sweetened rice cracker but WAY better than the kind in the states that taste/feel like styrofoam. these are often puffed from street vendors using a highpressure machine and the word 뻥 literally comes from the loud BANG sound it makes when it explodes out the machine in the shape of a disc~ this show happens to have pre-shaped it into hearts

they are slightly sweet, often given to babies for snacking/teething, they're crunchy but sorta melt in your mouth - highly recommend you try one for the cultural experience next time you're able

🩷 your new title track, KIG, was written and composed by you right? Where did you get the inspiration?
j-hope: the inspiration? well I did help write and compose it but actually I worked on the sesion in the US directly with the composers and .. so there was a lot of on-the-fly tweaking. For example, the producer hit his glass and I got stuck on that sound - so I kept building around it and that's kinda how KIG was born

this part is kinda long - filled w/ fun facts but long so you're welcome to skip ..i guess you're welcome to skip ANY/ALL my commentary lmao but still~

as you may know, honorifics in Korean social culture is HUGE. it's truly one of the most complex and beautiful (at best)/atrocious (at worst) dynamics that weave the tapestry of Korean social relationships..in real time.. like UPON meeting

one of the first questions you're asked in Korea is your age - this has little to do with your appearance or anything like that but more to do with a sense of responsibility~
if you become my dongseng, even if we JUST met, I'd feel an inherent sense of responsibility over you and feel like I have to take care of you to some extent. It doesn't matter if you're taller/stronger/bigger than me. If I'm you're unnie/noona, you are my bb and I protecc you. I feel this in my bones w/ all Korean Koreans (as distinct from Korean-Americans or Koreans from other places that don't necessarily abide these cultural practices.. we adjust as we go with them)

If you become my unnie/oppa, I'd likely expect/hope you feel the same kind of protective big sibling energy over me~
Now this dynamic doesn't always hold or look one type of way or convey any more/less respect or closeness~ For example, WOOGA Squad spans quite a few years from youngest (V) to oldest (Park Seojun), but all speak in the informal tone in Korean with each other although they do still address older members as hyung. But as you may have noticed with BTS, even as close as they are, they maintain honorifics even when they're only ~1 year apart. When you have professional/formal relationships to maintain (even with people closer to your age like 1-2 years older/younger), it's helpful to keep honorifics to preserve a level of formality and professional distance

In In the Soop 1, V & JK have a cute lil candlelit moment together to catch up and V asks JK at one point, "remember I said you don't have to speak to me in honorifics!" - to which JK answers, "no it's best that I kept it - otherwise it wouldn't have been wise" likely addressing the fact that since they were SO close and both got in trouble together/fought a lot as the two youngest, it would've been even harder for JK to maintain a level of deference for V if they were too palsy (not because V didn't warrant/deserve it) but just because JK was afraid he'd get too comfortable. This may sound weird to some- but it's a consideration Koreans ACTIVELY make all the timeeeee... like w/ every single new Korean person they meet 🤪

PROFESSIONALLY, this has huge implications. There are titles for everything - every tier of responsibility~ Generally, a veteran in the industry would be known as a sunbae; a junior=a hoobae; and this system of address works just fine~

if you remember this interview, Jin says that he was most proud of the moment Bang Si-Hyuk PD permitted Jin to call him "hyung" - this can be seen as the moment that Jin felt Bang PD respected/felt close enough to Jin to allow other official forms of address to fall second to the title of 'hyung' - indeed a big moment. Even so, in professional contexts, Koreans know when and where to uphold professional titles in conversation. But personally, this meant Jin could address Bang PD as 'hyung'

this ask/hope/aspiration of wanting to be able to address a senior professional in this way - for a number of reasons - doesn't quite work the same when it's a female & older male... but we can get into that next time. You won't see this ask being made a lot (though Sana did just go ahead and address j-hope as oppa on her fridge interview but this is mostly because it's the FRIDGE INTERVIEW SHOW's special rules to speak in informal Korean (versus her pursuing this on someone else's variety show or in a diff professional setting) so her playfully suggesting this isn't terribly offputting. But it IS awkward for j-hope so he freezes for a second after she calls him oppa all of a sudden

as a rule, if you're ever addressing a Korean person, especially before you know their age, it's best to speak in formal Korean until/unless you mutually agree (as peers) to speak informally OR if the older speaker allows you to speak informally

and as I'm typing this out.. I realize how this happens very naturally in my brain but I guess to people without these kinds of cultural dynamics in place, it might be really confusing to absorb - let alone practice... and on the flip, other cultures with similar rules may find it a lot easier to adjust~

all this said, these rules apply to Koreans first and foremost so if you're a foreigner trying your best at speaking Korean, ANYTHING (respectfully speaking of course) is totally fine and often times, many people will try to be as accommodating as they can if you are making an effort to speak

🩷I'll explain the rules - it's pretty simple
why am I nervous for j-hope rn? jakfldgjaldfjgaklfdgj praying he understands it in the ASAPP

THE RULES: basically, they all wear the rabbit hats and a kid's song will play. The staff have prepared specific lyrics, within each kid's song, that trigger one of three actions: squeeze right, squeeze left, squeeze both (bunny ears).

For the example round, Leeseo is given:

• 꼬 (kko) = squeeze right ear
• 부 (bu) = squeeze left ear
• 랑 (rang) = squeeze both ears

AS the song is playing, Leeseo has to do the above actions, each time those lyrics/syllables are sung.
