JK Live - 12/3
Kookooball's Pasta Adventures continue - curry doenjang pasta for his Busan childhood friend!
카레... (Curry...)
My commentary in green. Sir kookooball is extra cute on this day as he is ..in the always every of the times.
Is the wifi connected? Is it not connected? Oh they are coming in.. .
You're here?
Nae~
Yes, I'm here!
Curry doenjang
I'm just giving it a try.. just giving it a try.. just giving this a tryyy
I'm not going to use carrots
I'm someone that doesn't eat carrots...
um. sir kookooball, we all know this isn't true. we have video evidence sir.
today, we'll only be using potatoes, bacon, and onions
the potatoes..
wait.. potatoes.. I think ..actually potatoes aren't included either..
should we just finely chop them for the texture??
shall we?
okay anyway let's first the onion... and potatoes.. of the same length
i don't think too many goes in
::washing the potato and onion::
wow my hands are cold
omg my hands are so cold
and pat down the water
first - the onions
or first - the bacon needs to be taken out.. then the onions.. then fry.. then the potatoes.. then...

cute.
i don't know what i'm talking about ..
i have no idea..
how should i cut the onions?
hmm
like this..

i'll cut it thinly to get rid of the moisture quickly
know what i mean? i won't use the thick parts .. but i'll use a lot of onions to bring out the sweetness
is this too much?? is this too much? okay let's just hurry up and do this
cuz i'm hungry.. so i need to eat quickly
today, since i'm eating with my friend
bacon too ..oh it's thick.. slice it thinly..
the cutting board is sliding
okay put this in first.. uh oh an onion went in - no?

kookooball will find any stray onion pieces.
and then fry it in advance... on low heat..
with just a little bit of olive oil ::proceeds to put in much olive oil::
and stir fry it slowly
meanwhile.. the potatoes.. how should i cut the potatoes
::bunny pouts::

the shape has to be pretty so..
::intense focus on the potato cuts::
do we even need a lot of potatoes??
make it really small ..
is this going to turn out well? i don't know..
put in crush in some butter
it needs to be melted into the oil
today too, as always, fresh cream goes in
fresh cream and butter go in
why isn't this *punk coming down yet?
my friend's coming after he dries his hair
*이 자식 (ee jashik) - this can be used as a term of endearment or an insult depending on context, in this case it's a term of endearment as this friend who is apparently drying his hair upstairs in JK's apt is his Busan friend from childhood! You may have heard/will hear the hyungs calling any of their dongsengs this word in BTS (and in other groups, kdramas, etc.) - it's more commonly used with little kids (regardless of gender) and then after a certain point, more with men than women, kinda exactly like the word 'punk' (at least my experience of that word growing up in America - little kids, then mostly young men/men) there are other similarly endearing/insulting words used among women loll but we'll cross that bridge later
what is that?
did the coating peel off?? [of his pan]

look at his litto face staring into the very soul of his pan
dear kookoo's pan, please don't be peeling off wtf you have to feed this angel bb for as long as you live.
oOo it's salty
the curry is..
[to his friend] you came!
friend: what are you doing?
JK: makin doenjang curry pasta
...but im not going to use all the curry
you have to melt it like this
[to his friend] ...it might not taste good
friend: ??idkwhat he says
JK: i think it might've been better if i used udon noodles ..since it's pasta i'm a little worried..
::stir stir:: silent cooking ::
[to his friend]when did you sleep?
friend: yesterday?
JK: yea..
friend: ...1..maybe 2am?
JK: 2am?
friend: yea.. cuz i have off today
my friend who lives with me is my friend from Busan - i've known him since kindergarten - like we're so close that we're always telling each other to *stfu
so the korean subtitles actually interestingly edited this part to say "tell each other to shut your mouth"
here's the difference:
*닥쳐 (dakchyuh) - depending on harshness of tone/context if can mean shut up/stfu but it can be taken as endearingly or as harshly as in English - in the same way it might not matter at all if your bestie tells you to STFU but it would feel insulting if someone else did, etc. - same in Korean.
the Korean subtitles edited it to 입 다물라고 하는 (eep damoorago haneun) = to close your mouth
사이 (sa-ee) - relationship
friend: me? when have i everr ::laughs::
JK: (acting out a past moment where they'd say this) JUST! SHUTupp ::his voice fizzles out a bit and he doesn't actually pronounce it all::

delighted bunn swearing at his childhood friend loll
..so one should really show the cooking process but i can't set up the camera above
i can only show the finished product, the result...
potatoes..
okay for now let's put the oil in here.. and then the onions..
oh spicy
it wouldn't be a kookooball cooking sesh if there wasn't some silent light dancing in between to punctuate the cooking process
[to his friend] if it doesn't taste good we'll order IMMEDIATELY
friend: then you eat it
okay so then you put in the potatoes and stir fry..
put it in.. and then..
miso doenjang goes in..
the moisture from the onions has kinda died down so now.. the potatoes
it smells good? it smells good right now..
gochugaru (korean red pepper flakes)
black pepper
::stir stir::
now!
wait..
okay okay i feel it now ::the vibe::
*왔어 (wassuh) - it's here
느낌이 왔어 (nukimee wassuh) - the feel/vibe is here; you might recognize 'nukim' from 'sexy nukim by Balming Tiger ft. RM' - meaning 'sexy feeling/vibe'

a moment of silence to appreciate sexy nukim RM before moving back to kookooball's cute kitchen adventures
but when they say that 'the vibe has come/arrived' it's basically saying "i got a feel for this now" - as in, I think I'm getting the hang of this... that said, he says this and RIGHT after he says...
i still can't get the water right..
::stir stir::
sighh

a moment of sass. this is all part of the process. the sassy pause is what helps develop the umami flavor

::mumbling to himself::
..i don't think it's the coating [of the pan] peeling off.. ::bunny pouts::
that's weird though..
::nom test::
::sprinkles in salt::
::tries to open a butter:: fails:: puts in more olive oil::
oh to be stared at by the jeonbunnkookooball like this pasta
it has to turn out yummy though 🥺
okay so a slight soysaucy color is coming through ..which means.. at this point.. here is when i have to add in the doenjang
this is miso doenjang
i just take about this much miso doenjang and.. well..

oh it's not as salty as i thought it would be
then stir fry the doenjang!
i feel like maybe it'd be okay to put in a little bit more?
no.. i can't..
::puts in more::
oh it smells good..
next.. bacon ..like half the bacon?
drain the oil [into the pan]
sssssp.. i am.. anxious..
just now it occurs to me, you've probably heard him say 볶아 (bokka) like 5-10+ times by now.. and that just means to stir fry
볶음밥 (bokkeumbap) you may recognize from Korean menus - is just stir fried/fried rice
제육볶음 (jaeyook bokkeum) = stir fried/fried pork
okay..
to a little bit of water.. now it's time for the curry..
curry.. idk..
now the potatoes.. while they cook as the starch comes out
it'll get thick and sticky
okay put in all the noodles
it smells good? though.. ?
since the curry and doenjang are both salty..
i don't think i'll have to add the pasta water.. this is how i feel..
the color looks legit..??? bunn does nomtest
now.. okay.. add a little bit of sugar.. is this too little?
and then leave this be..
::pours in fresh cream::
::stir stir::
oh i did not set the timer...
7 minutes?
okay.. not bad..
oh okay i think it's okay..

this pasta is bunnbunkook approved
::more cream::
::more water::
it's not badd..
i think it's okay..
okay lemme try this .. ::tries pasta water??::
also wouldn't be a kookoo kooking session without random stretches

a critical step in every solid pasta recipe to get the perfect al dente noodle is to perform the dance to placate the pasta gods as demonstrated by JK above
good good good good
there's a lot of noodles..
it has to be a bit more starchy..no?
ooh okay i'm looking forward to this now.. it has to be yummy though..
::silence::
this is not a communication live!
this is a cooking live hehehe
소통 (sohtong) - communication; this is actually a good word to listen for - you'll hear it EVERYWHERE because they have to say the word 'communicate' a LOTTT lol in interviews, promos, on lives, etc.
but JK is saying this here now because he realizes he hasn't really been interacting or communicating with ARMY or reading comments - he's just been narrating his own cooking process - but that is what he said he'd do a few days back so he's just reminding ARMY
okay the curry visual is like this

it's kinda yellowish like kabocha/sweet pumpkin soup
but once it's plated - it could look nice - don't you think?
3 minutes [left on his timer]
okay now we move this over
::moves noodles into the sauce to finish cooking IN the sauce::
i think it'll be okay?
::mumbling to himself::
(more pasta dance)
this is how you know it's going to be so good. so much dance went into this pasta.
it'll be good once it reduces..
Jin has SUPER TUNA. JK has CURRY PASTA. the choreography for both are ::chef's kiss::
red pepper (not gochugaru this time)
dried parsley goes in a little bit too now
it looks okay though..
::stirring quietly::
keeeeep taste testing..
so at this point.. oh.. why don't i have any?
okay lemme just put in a bit more pasta water..

friends tell me why i flinched when he looked up like that because i thought i made eye contact. i'm so tired right now lmaooo HAHAHA
::twirling up the pasta for he and his friend::
::seeing all the pasta sectioned out into the two bowls::
....i think we might have to eat more after this?
friend concerned: why.. is it too little?
JK: i think it's less than I thought it'd be..
friend: ah..
now the remaining bacon we didn't use earlier.. we put it on top
i think it'll taste better than it looks maybe..
okayyy
okay we'll just clean up later and... we're done..
i'll show you the result

it's so pretty!
::bunny giggles::
yes.. doenjang curry..
butter?
friend re butter: can i eat it?
JK: oh yea *eat it
먹어라 (muggurah) - eat it (informal), but JK's busan comes out and he says 'moogeurah'
ohhh it better taste good.. (another little accent moment)
맛있어야 될 텐데 (masheessuhya dwell tendae) - i hope it tastes good; but he ends it with "dwell tendeee" just a cute little accent moment
friend: ??saysomethingican'thear
JK: it's probably good.. wait.. don't eat it yet. let me eat it first ::bunny giggless::
friend: how is it?
JK: if this was udon noodles it would've absorbed the flavor better
i thought about that too - like pasta and the curry flavor don't really go well together

friend: isn't this.. your own recipe though?
JK: yea... but i tastes good.. it does taste good but.. a taste you can't find in stores - isn't it decent??
i can't get over how cute he sounds when his Busan comes out with his Busan friend... #cryingfor3businessdays
friend: it tastes goodd
JK: but if it was udon.. the potatoes are cooked exactly right i think.. i should've used udon noodles.. pasta noodles don't really go well with this.. the seasoning is good.. the sauce is good..
friend: ::laughing:: how many times you gonna say udon noodles.. hey but it's good
JK: it does taste good though - oh but the doenjang flavor is not coming through as strong.. maybe cuz it's miso doenjang ..but okay - I'm satisfied
만족 (manjohk) = satisfied, sometimes Koreans say just this word when they've just eaten something that 'hit the spot' or after they did something and are satisfied with the job they did (JK's use just now re: his first attempt to try out a new recipe just following his gut/curiosity)
JK: it turned out exactly the flavor I imagined.. like it doesn't sound like it'd go together at first.. but it's.. the same.. it's yummy.. mm.. good
friend: but if you did use udon noodles it would have been a little bit better
JK: or even maybe ramen? but it's good.. mMm the sauce is good - i feel like if I made risotto with this sauce it'd be really good
friend: i was thinking the sameee
JK: like seriously..
::bunny claps::
okay but i'm satisfied
[to some ahjumah off screen - perhaps a housekeeper?]
JK: Eemo!
eemo: mM?
JK: you don't have rice do you?
eemo: i do!
JK: should we eat this with rice??
eemo: want rice?
JK: can you give us a little bit of rice? ([cute])(https://weverse.io/bts/live/3-215169045?begin=2692)
eemo: got it
JK [to his friend] are you going to eat it with rice?
friend: i..ate ..all the sauce already
JK: you don't have any more??
friend: mhmm
[JK to eemo]
JK: I really just want one fourth of a bowl of rice
[JK to friend]
JK: you want some of mine? like mixed together?
friend: nah..
JK: ::bunny giggless:: you should've left some of it [the sauce]
friend: no but the sauce was so good though..
[potentially someone else (non-Eemo) off screen] there's usually rice in the rice cooker so...
JK: there's too much [rice] though
[voice] just eat as much as you want and leave the rest then
it actually sounds like this second voice may be some kind of housekeeper or something like that
JK to friend: ya.. you're probably not full yet huh?
friend: no no this was good enough
JK: or there's kimchi jjigae over there too - with the meat in it.. cuz i'm not full yet either.. ::bunny giggles::
I'll finish eating this and then end the live though everyone
since I'm just doing this live for this meal
okay so.. ricee rice goes way better
okay so i guess i should just make this like regular curry ..that is the answer..
you all did great today [to ARMY]
now i will be going to start eating round 2
friend: hehehe
non-eemo-voice: can i just throw this away?
JK: O,O what is it? (formal Korean)
non-eemo-voice: the curry
JK: oh yea yea yea the curry
JK to ARMY: goodbyeee
안녕히 계세요 (annyeonghee gyeseyo) - goodbye (to those staying)
it has since been brought to my attention that there was actually quite a bit of drama that occurred over these mysterious voices off screen
so let me just offer my two cents here:
1. who JK chooses to spend time with is nobody's business
2. that said, the eemo-sounding voice, in my opinion, was likely an older housekeeper and the younger voice was likely a younger housekeeper (perhaps the housekeeper's assistant or junior staff or maybe even daughter or something like that) OR his friend's entire family (as in eemo = friend's mom + other voice = friend's sister who is older than JK + friend) - these GUESSES are based on how/what other voice said to JK, how JK interacted with eemo/other voice; etc. re: who spoke to who in formal Korean versus not, etc. and the fact that he said 'my friend who LIVES here' so perhaps his friend's family was visiting the FRIEND - and when friends stay over like that - it could mean a semi-permanent living situation but it could also just be 'crashing for a while' - if you remember back some years ago, when Park Seojoon's place was either underoing reno? or something was wrong with it?? he stayed over V's place for like a substantial amount of time~ so it might've been that kind of situation BUTTTTTT,
3. in all honesty, whoever they were, as long as they were there with JK's consent and not harmful to JK idgaffffff!! and it was OBVIOUS they were in his space with permission so that's all i care about loll
