Hi Lovely People!
A smol bit of updated housekeeping as I seem to have a new batch of subscribers of veteran & baby ARMY and in between!

🚨 You are now all WELCOME to share screenshots/quotes of my translations anywhere on social media as long as (1) you're not sharing most of/the entire thing, (2) you also include the CLICKABLE link to the full translation any/every time you share a screenshot/quote OR CLICKABLE tag (e.g. for example if you share a screenshot on Instagram/TikTok where clickable links don't work in captions, please tag my account on that platform, etc.) - so it's accessible for new people to find me easily, and (3) credit me (@tk.insights) as the translator.

I believe in honoring the hard work it takes for me to provide these translations BUT ALSO in making the translations as accessible as possible - so all translations will be made free to the general public the following month. My paid subscribers get access asap!

Occassionally, you may see me offer free translations to the general public off schedule if I feel that the translation is critically important for all ARMY to see (e.g., the RM live from a few weeks ago was made publicly available for free to all because I know it stirred a lot of concern/bad translations caused a lot of undue panic.)

*붕어 빵 (bungeoppang) = essentially like a waffle-type batter that's been pressed into the shape of a little fish traditionally filled with a sweet red bean paste, it was/is a very popular street-food snack sold by cart vendors in Korea and a go-to, inexpensive warm snack on a cold day- esp enjoyed by kids in the afternoon like right outta elementary school back in the day - but now made globally available hahaha

FOR THE RECORD - FRIENDS. This is based on what I've seen in quality/speed of translations - but basically, when BTS members turn on random unscheduled lives, it is translated by the equivalent of like leaving your phone's google translate on, having it catch/translate everything in real time. It's not the WORST EVER POSSIBLE solution but it's definitely not AI and it's definitely not a real person.

AI would do a MUCH better job than the tech currently being used by WV for the automated translations.

For the scheduled/special event lives, they DO seem to have at least one live translator on site?? BUT I've seen the results of the live translators for things like Jin's SCHEDULED, PRE-PLANNED live to promote his tour, j-hope's SCHEDULED pre-planned live to talk about his new music, etc. and the ACCURACY of the live translator-supported translations are definitely better in quality, but they're SOOO slow. My impression is that it's probably because these translators are fluent in Korean but not as much in English?? So their translations still wind up a bit choppy but DEFINITELY infinitely better at expressing what was intended vs. the automated translations that just spit out literal translations and botch homonyms and stuff..

I'll say it again - PLEASE be critical of translations you find online - especially if you find it's asserting weird or negative or uncharacteristic scenarios re:the artists you love. Seek translations from NATIVE/FLUENTTT (not just with the language but with the culture) translators that can calibrate for tone and intention. I've actually seen SO many incorrect translations that get like 60% of the snippet translated CORRECTLY, but then 40% of it SO WRONG that it leaves listeners really confused - those types of "translators" are prob just running it through Papago/Google Translate and then adding their own thoughts into the mix without noting that it's their personal interpretation of events. This is also why I include MY COMMENTARY in a different color and if I don't know something I'll just always be super honest! I don't know ALL the latest slang/trends in Korea (as I do not in America LMAO) - and I won't pretend to

they're all talking at once - but basically this chunk of convo is explaining that back in the day - they had to be extra careful with posting pictures of themselves with specially dyed/styled hair that was styled specifically for content/photoshoot/mv - because that could be seen as a spoiler of sorts... so they had to go so far as to use products or darker/crazier colors to COVER UP their hair associated with new content UNTIL that content officially dropped

For example (this is made up), if Jimin dyed his hair pink for XYZ music video set to drop in 30 days.. then he may have had to recolor/cover up his pink hair UNTIL the XYZ music video dropped so as not to give anything away prematurely.

NOW reflecting back on those seasons - Jin's saying he thinks that may have been even more wasteful re: their image fodder because then the 'COVER UP' color hair couldn't be used in the future - and "couldn't" not in the sense that it literally/technically could not be done but especially back in the day, especially when they were not as globally recognized, among celebrities -who had what hair color / being mindful not to appear to 'rip off' some other person's iconic hair style/color or artistic look / etc. was probably much more top of mind to them/to their company than now..

"manner" in Korea is not really referring to 'upholding etiquette' so much as it means 'being considerate' overall

SUGA contemplating all his life choices.. V in his own world.. Jm trying to understand the mysterious physics of military era sleeping kookoo ..Jin is buried under coats. I LOVE.

current/new military "beds" are essentially cots or narrow bunkbeds - but as you may know, RM was sent to one of the OLDEST bases and he had the OG style sleeping setup - which was essentially just a raised platform/floor and soldiers would roll out their mats next to each other and just sleep on their mat - as it was one connected platform, you couldn't fall off of this sleeping setup

PAUSE. Okay so quick note PUH-LEASE. I know that AI is an INCREDIBLY powerful tool that can enable SO much good and truly absorb so much menial administrative work so that 'people' can really focus on being the BRAINS behind the work/art/whatever. At least that's how it was meant to be used... to absorb the menial stuff intelligently, so PEOPLE could get to the creative, soul-filled, deeply dignifying work of solving problems and creating beauty. I BELIEVE this is possible and I KNOW it IS being used in this way in many spaces.

That said, like ALL nice things - RUINED by 2 kinds of people. There are outright terrible people out there exploiting everything for profit. That's a fact. I don't believe you are or personally know too many of those people intimately. BUT! The other type of person RUINING the landscape of EVERYTHING with AI is the IGNORANT user. Not evil people - but random individuals who might think it would be cool to hear [insert your favorite song] covered by [insert your favorite artist] - GENERATE a very compellingly similar rendering of this AI COVER with all the quirks, accents, traits of REAL PEOPLE - on demand. No need to wait, no need to ask, no need to wonder. Just type the prompt and then spit out a fake. Who's it hurting?

LITERALLY everyone. It hurts artists that have their likeness and unique human dignity by way of voice or style RIPPED without consent and smashed on top of something they never asked to be associated with. It hurts listeners from being able to discern REAL art from generated art - we are becoming further and further removed from what has the fingerprints of HUMAN experience, pain, and wonder. It hurts the PLANET - every time you generate a frivolous UNNECESSARY prompt for your amusement, it costs electricity which turns to heat which needs to be cooled which requires more energy/water, etc. - all to say, all of these seemingly harmless uses add up over millions of users per moment at scale. So PLEASE use AI responsibly, please do NOT circulate/encourage AI cover songs by BTS, images/deep fakes of BTS members, etc. and gently, but firmly, call it out when you see others engaging in this behavior.

I'm a HUGE believer of Hanlon's Razor, and you'll see me cite it often (essentially, never attribute to MALICE what can be explained by IGNORANCE). Further -I don't think you need to be mean/rude to call out problematic behavior - especially if it's perpretated by someone who sincerely doesn't know any better. I don't think you need to be cancelled in order to change (unless you do). But as beautiful, smart, wonderful people, and as ARMY - we should stay informed! okay moving on..

I grew up thinking SOOO many words were Korean (because I also grew up very close to my maternal grandparents who lived through occupied Korea) that had some Japanese words deeply embedded in their vocabulary. Since Korean and Japanese sound quite similar in some regards, I grew up never knowing these words weren't Korean until I went to college and met other Korean-American friends who had no idea what I was talking about LOLL

there's really not an exact way to translate this but it's basically describing when different regions of Korea rep/take pride in their region SO much that they wind up looking down on/have strong [usually negative] opinions about people from other regions.. i mean similarly to sentiments in the states - maybe tensions like "east coast vs. west coast" or "rural areas vs. urban areas" - sometimes simple & playful, sometimes harmful and asinine; but the political climate in Korea is kinda dicey right now..

I think RM is VERY sensitive (these days/this year) to the public perception of BTS and is trying to get in front of any perceived 'slights' or misunderstandings ANYWHERE as members talk about having/losing an accent or not being able to re-learn/do their original accents, or being judged for having/not having accents anymore, etc. - this may not seem like a big deal but this COULD BE quite a point of pride/connection for some Koreans and while I think he earnestly may not have even noticed it in other cases- perhaps because of recent chaos as well as just the overall political climate (entirely outside of BTS all together), he's just being extra cautious - but this is just my opinion on why he talks about this at all

The Korean title for the song "Telepathy" is 잠시 (jamshi, "a moment" - which conspicuously has NOTHING to do with telepathy the way we understand it LOLL and I imagine? most Koreans refer to that song as 잠시 (although I'd have no way to confirm) so it makes sense that he completely forgot what that song was

There are many instances, not just for BTS, but all K-entertainment where the 'piece' (song/ drama/ movie/ whatever) has one title in Korean and then global marketing influences change the title for international audiences - not just by translating it literally but by meaning or coming up with an entirely new title with the intention of making it appeal to a wider demographic by trying to hit on the 'core' subject/point of the 'piece' - and as a Korean-American straddling both understandings.. I think about 65-70% of the time, they do a greatttt job with that.. but a SOLIDDDDDDD 30%+ I think it loses the plot OR it touches upon the point, sure, but it would've been BETTER to keep the 'original' concept in tact

Examples of this without.. my personal judgment👀 on any of them would be:
- "When Life Gives You Tangerines" (폭싹 속았수다, poksak sogatsooda = (In Jeju) you've been through SOO much/SUCH a hard life
- "Black Knight" (택배기사, taekbae gisa = the delivery driver)
- "Boy With Luv" (작은 것들을 위한 시 (jageun geotdeuleul wihan shi = a poem regarding the small things)👀

For all ARMY that need a reminder, artists concerts are not just for the fans. It's equally (if not primarily?) for the artists to express themselves creatively through the whole of the performance from beginning to end, the songs, the dances, the theatrics, the vibes, etc. - so now that they're all in their late 20s/early 30s they feel that the songs of their youth are no longer sincerely songs 'they embody' as performers that pour so deeply into their lyrics, they may choose not to include those songs! So if you ever see any ARMY complaining, I think this is a helpful reminder. We love BTS for always writing about (and thereby inevitably being SO SINCERE/VULNERABLE) with their music - NOT for pandering to crowds or feigning to embody 'trendy' but irrelevant [to them] topics, etc. I sincerely hope all their concerts continue to evolve with them throughout time - no matter how that looks!

It was tight so I was like 'doesn't this look too tight?" but he was like 'no it looks so good on you' ::V chuckles:: and then I went home and the hyungs were like 'why did you buy those pants??' and Taehyungie was right there next to me saying 'yea, i told you not to buy those pants' but i already took the tags off and it was like 320,000Won!!
